Have you ever received this message in Google AdWords? Are you having this issue right now?

This message is the equivalent of having your ads shut off. The bad news is Google has rated your landing page as low quality, and is refusing to display your ads. You won’t get impressions for any of your ads when you have this message.

The mantra of Google AdWords is relevancy. Your Keyword Phrase, Ad and Landing Page must all be relevant to achieve a good quality score. If you get a low quality score, your ad becomes disabled.

So what do you do to fix it? How do you improve relevancy? There are a couple of steps you can take.

First, take all the keywords you are interested in running ads for, and place them in unique AdGroups. That means one AdGroup per Keyword. If you have too many keywords, you may want to start with only your top performing keywords.

Next, write a unique ad for each keyword. You want the headline of the ad to be the exact keyword. The content in description lines 1 and 2 can be the same. But each headline needs to be the exact keyword. This makes ad unique to the keyword. AdWords will recognize the keyword in the ad, and that makes the ad relevant to the keyword. Plus the consumer is likely to click on the ad if the headline matches their search.

While you are creating the ad, also put the keyword in the display url. The display url must have the same domain as the destination url, but beyond you can do what you like. For example, try a display url of MyDomain.com/my-keyword-phrase. You get the keyword in the ad twice, boosting relevancy.

Finally, create a custom landing page for each keyword. You need the keyword in the following places on your landing page.

The url if possible
The page title
The meta tags for keywords and description
The < h1 > tags on the page
The content, with 2% to 5% density

Doing so makes the landing page relevant to the keyword. In the end, you’ll have relevant keyword, Ad and Landing Page and you so can say goodbye to the message “Ads Rarely Show Due To Low Quality Score”.

You should be aware that a major component of quality score is the CTR. Google basically says a good ad will thrive (get a good CTR) because humans reading the ad will be compelled to click on it, therefore it is relevant. A CTR of less than 1 percent could be contributing to a low quality score. A CTR of at least 2 percent is desirable.

However, relevancy is likely a bigger factor in your quality score issue. If your campaign is new, you won’t have enough impressions to create a meaningful CTR. Even if it is older and has many impressions, you can benefit from better relevancy.

Google AdWords is the platform which Google use to allow people to advertise their company, product or service on the Google website and Content Network. The following step-by-step guide is aimed to help you create a very simple and basic AdWords account which you can use to promote your business, gain visitors and potential increase sales.

The guide should not be used as an extensive look into Google AdWords and its capabilities, and the following guide does not guarantee sales. If you would like more information on Google AdWords itself or information on getting a professional Google AdWords account designed and managed click here.

Okay, so it is now time to show you how to create your own Google AdWords account. Take a deep breath, settle into a comfy chair in front of your computer and get ready to follow these steps:

1.) Initially you need to navigate to the Google AdWords home page and sign up for a new AdWords account, so browse to http://adwords.google.com/select/Login and click on the ‘Try AdWords now >>’ button.

2.) First you need to select which type of Google AdWords account you require. This walkthrough is going to show you how to set up a ‘Standard Edition’ account. So, select the ‘Standard Edition’ radio button and click on ‘Continue >>’

3.) You will now find yourself in the Google AdWords sign-up wizard; this will walk you through the different stages of creating an account. The first area you need to choose is your language targeting and your geographical targeting. You can select many languages to target, but for this walk through I am going to just target English speaking customers.

The second section is to target different customers by location; once again I am just going to target the whole of the United Kingdom. However you could target individual countries, counties, major cities, small towns or within a certain distance from a town, so anyone within 60 miles of Newcastle upon Tyne. This can be changed by selecting ‘Change Targeting’. When you have chosen your language and location targeting click ‘Continue >>’ to continue to the next stage of the wizard

4.) Stage 2 of the Google AdWords wizard is how to create an advert for your campaign. A campaign advert has 5 areas;

*Headline – This is the blue underlined headline you can see on the below example, it has to be no more than 25 characters long including space’s. *Description line 1 – This is the first black line under the headline, this has to be no more than 35 characters including spaces. *Description line 2 – This is the second black line under the headline, this also has to be no more than 35 characters including spaces. *Display URL – This is the URL that is displayed in green at the bottom of the advert. The Display URL is the web address of your website. This also has to be no more than 35 characters, this does not need to include the www at the start of the websites URL *Destination URL – The destination URL is the only area of the advert that is not seen. This is the page on your website you want the user to visit, so it could be your home page or a more relevant internal page on your website.

Example of a Google AdWords Advert

1930s Football Programmes

Unique, Highly Collectable 1930’s

Football Programmes in Top Quality

1930s-Football-Programmes.co.uk

It is important to note that you can change your advert later, so it does not have to be perfect at the moment. Once you are happy with your advert you can click on ‘Continue >>’ to move onto the next stage of the wizard

5.) The 3rd stage of account set up is deciding which keywords to use to promote your website. Your keywords are the keywords and phrases that you believe are relevant to your website. If people were to then search for these keywords your advert would appear in the Google sponsored listings. Some keywords are more expensive than others so it is important to use the correct keywords which are going to have the potential to generate leads or sales.

The higher you bid on a keyword the higher you will appear in the search engines, so depending on your budget you may need to complete some intensive keyword research. To add keywords to your AdWords account you need to add them to the text box on the Google wizard, using a separate line for each keyword. So using my 1930’s football programmes example I would insert the following keywords

rare football programmes

rare soccer programmes

rare football program

rare soccer program

1930s football programmes

1930s soccer programmes

1930s football program

1930s soccer program

1930 football programmes

1930 soccer programmes

1930 football program

1930 soccer program

30s football programmes

30s soccer programmes

30s football program

30s soccer program

Please note that you can edit these keywords once the account has been finished. So, once you have chosen your keywords, select ‘Continue >>’ to move onto the next stage of the wizard.

6.) The 4th stage of the wizard is to decide on your currency, daily budget and your maximum cost per click. It is important to note that you CAN NOT change your currency at a later stage, however you can edit your daily budget and cost per click. So, for this example I am going to leave the currency at ‘British Pounds Sterling (GDP £)”. Your ‘daily budget’ is the maximum amount you are willing to spend on advertising you website on the Google network. You can change your daily budget at a later stage if you require.

The ‘Default CPC bid’ is the maximum amount you are willing to pay per visit. This will decide which position you appear in the search engines. The higher you are willing to pay the higher you appear. This can also be changed at a later stage if required. As my example is quite an uncompetitive market and I am selling goods with a high sale price, I am going to set my daily budget at £10 and my ‘Default CPC bid’ at £0.20. Once you are happy with your daily budget and maximum cost per click, click on ‘Continue >>’ to move onto the next stage.

7.) The final stage is to review your account to make sure you are happy with your selections. All of this can be changed once the account has been created. If you are happy with you account click on ‘Continue to Sign Up >>’

8.) To have a Google AdWords account you need to have a Google account, if you have an account, select ‘I have an email address and password I already use with Google services like AdSense, Google Mail, Orkut or iGoogle’. A second option should then appear below, if you want to use the email address for your Google AdWords account then select the top option, ‘I would like to use my existing Google account for AdWords’ and enter your Email and Password. If either you do not want to use your current Google account for this AdWords account or you do not have a Google account then you will be promoted to create a new login. Once you have created a new account or logged into your existing account you will be promoted with a login link. Select this link and you should log into your new Google AdWords account.

Congratulations you have just created your very own Google AdWords account!

However there is one last small point which you need to complete before your ads start getting shown on the Google network, which is you need to enter your payment details.

9.) To enter your payment details select ‘My Account’ from the tabs at the top of the page. Once loaded select ‘Billing Preferences’, in here you need to follow the wizard to entering your payment details. Once you have entered your Payment details, wait 15 minutes and then go to Google.co.uk and enter one of your keyword and your adverts should start to appear on the Google network!!!

Congratulations!

The goal of every Google AdWords advertiser is to get winning results with Google AdWords. So, today, I am going to share one mistake that I see almost all new Google AdWords advertisers make. If you make this mistake, this is a sure fire way to guarantee that you will not get winning results with Google AdWords.

What is the mistake?

Not using all of the keyword matching options intelligently in Google AdWords. In other words, I see far too many advertisers that initially buy “broad phrase” keywords without having build a solid list of negative keywords. The results of this will always be far worse than what they could be.

Why do so many new Google AdWords advertisers make this mistake?

There are primarily two reasons

Not thinking broad enough

A lack of understanding and experience

Every Google AdWords advertisers gets excited by the search volume that they see for general keyword phrases. While it is true that this is where the bulk of the searches are there is a big problem with using a “broad phrase” match.

Let me give you a real world example of a business we just consulted in the real estate category. Our client runs a very successful company that offers a leading tool for real estate agents and one of the keywords the client was bidding on was “real estate.” Our client was bidding on this keyword without having build a list of negative keywords.

This is a sure way to get killed in Google AdWords and it will be impossible to get winning results with this system.

Why?

There are a milliion different people that look for real estate on Google. Obviously, our client only wants to reach his target audience (real estate agents). So, bidding on such a general keyword phrase, will mean that his ads gets served when lots of people that are not real estate agents type in “real estate” in Google.

Far worse, our client was not thinking of all the other combinations of keyword phrases that contain the words “real estate” that his company has nothing to do with. For example:

- Real estate investing
- Real estate taxes
- Real estate mortgages
- Real estate construction
- Real estate builders
- Real estate finance
- Real estate litigation

The list of negative keywords goes on and on and on. By just including a broad match “real estate” and NOT building a very comprehensive negative keyword list, our clients ads would have surfaced for tons of unrelated searches on Google. Worse, our client was bidding up to $1.00 per click.

Bidding on broad keyword phrases such as “real estate”can be a great way to get winning results with Google AdWords but only under one condition. The keyword phrase has to be relevant for your target audience and you have to build a bullet proof negative keyword list.

Did You Know That One Secret Keyword Alone Could Double the Conversion Rate of Your Site?
Try testing the “secret” keyword in your Google AdWords Ads

Today I am going to share a secret with you that will surprise you. This time I added just one keyword “Secrets” into the headline of our Google AdWords ads.

The result?Take a look

The only change was that we added the keyword”Secrets”to the headline of one of the ads.

What did I expect?Truth be told, I have long known that”Secrets”is one of those power keywords.Everyone wants to know what The Secrets of X are (just think of the movie The Secret). However, I also think that it is incredibly overused but as long as it works, I am happy to keep trying it.

In this case, I thought it might help boost the CTR but in fact what happened is that the CTR was about the same but we saw a HUGE jump in the conversion rate.About 3 times (+200%) as many people took advantage of the offer.

I am often amazed at how often I observe that even though there is no noticeable change in the CTR there still can be a huge difference in the conversion rate.I am surprised because by the time people take action on the site, I thought they would have long forgotten about the ad that they read and they probably have. However, it does seem to make a lasting impact.Once again, it shows you why monitoring the conversion rate and testing everything is so important.

As you all know, I am very passionate about Internet Marketing, Search Engine Marketing, and Search Engine Optimization and for a very long time I have been following the industry and all of the top Internet Marketing blogs.

There are some truly EXCELLENT blogs out there such as:

Duct Tap Marketing
Marketing Pilgrim
Pronet Advertising
SearchEngineLand
SEO Book
SEOMoz.org

That is just to name a few of my favorite Internet Marketing and Search Engine Marketing blogs. However, what is missing is blogs that give excellent tips, tricks, and advice on Google AdWords.

Where are the best Google AdWords blogs? Do you know of a great Google AdWords blog that I am not aware of?

I write frequently about Google AdWords because it is THE #1 Channel channel for small businesses to rapidly start driving traffic to their website. However, where are all the other top Google AdWords blogs?

Granted, the other blogs that I listed above, also write some excellent posts about Google AdWords but for the most part they just mention industry news, not original findings, lessons, tips, and tricks. Perhaps they are all highly guarded secrets. I know that I am definitely more public than most with sharing test results but there must be others out there no?

Here are the other top Google AdWords blogs that I follow:

AdWords Insider (official Google AdWords Blog)

If you know of a great Google AdWords blog that I have not listed, please do let me know and I will add it to the list.
